Maintenance Monday – green air freshener

Freshen That Air

Here’s an easy way to make your own eco-friendly air freshener with ingredients you have around the house. Mix 2 cups warm water with 2 tablespoons baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon orange or vanilla extract. If you prefer, you can use an essential oil for scent: lemon, jasmine, rose, and lavender all smell wonderful. If you leave out the extract or oil, it’s safe to spray around kids and most furniture (although you might want to spot-check first).

Maintenance Monday – baking soda

Baking soda isn’t just for baking or keeping your refrigerator smelling fresh. Here are five great ways to use baking soda:

Dishwashing Delight
– If hard water in your home causes spots and stains on items that have been run through the dishwasher, add a spoonful of baking soda to your next load. Your dishes will come out spot-free.

Jewelry Cleaner
– Baking soda is safe and effective when it comes to cleaning gold and silver jewelry. For best results, use a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, and rub gently on your jewelry. It gets rid of dirt, grime, and body oils, and leaves your gold and silver sparkling.

Scuff Remover
– To remove scuff marks left on your floor by dark-soled shoes, rub some baking soda into the spot with a wet rag. They’ll virtually disappear.

Make Better Coffee
– Combine 1/4 cup baking soda with 1 quart water and run it through your coffee maker as if you were making a cup of coffee. The baking soda will get rid of any mineral deposits that have built up inside. After your baking-soda cycle, run a pot full of plain water through. Now you’re ready to make some of the best-tasting brew to ever come out of your old coffee maker!

Stainless Steel Wonder
– To get the cleanest bathroom fixtures you’ve ever seen, apply a paste of vinegar and baking soda to stainless steel faucets, knobs, and towel bars. Lay old towels or rags on top and wait one hour, then buff off. Rinse the fixtures and then let them dry for sparkling fixtures without a hint of water marks.

Maintenance Monday – dryer filter

Even if you are very diligent about cleaning the lint filter in your dryer, it still may be causing you a problem. If you use dryer sheets, a waxy build up could be accumulating on the filter causing your dryer to over heat. The solution to this is to clean your filter with a toothbrush and hot soapy water every six months.

Maintenance Monday – remove coffee stains with beer

One Great Beverage Deserves Another

Coffee stains can be frustrating, but did you know you can get them out of your carpet by pouring beer on them? That’s right – just pour a couple of sips onto the stain and it should vanish. Dab up the extra beer with a paper towel, and if the coffee stain doesn’t go away completely, repeat the task a couple more times. This works for tea stains too.

Football is Back!

It is the game everyone has been talking about. The playoff rematch of one of the most exciting games in recent NFL history. Tonight is the NFL Kickoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Denver Broncos. The Ravens are defending their Super Bowl championship, and the Broncos are looking for revenge for their heartbreaking, season-ending loss.

Besides being a much anticipated game, this Ravens-Broncos rematch has also brought much controversy. Historically the Super Bowl Champions open the season at home, but the Ravens will be playing the Broncos in Denver because the Orioles have a game in Baltimore. There was a suggestion of changing it to a day game, but both the Orioles and their opponent the Chicago White Sox had night games on the road last night, which would have made a day game today extremely difficult. Baltimore Ravens fans are not happy. The NFL has tried to appease Ravens fans by having the Kickoff Celebration in Baltimore rather than in Denver, the actual host city of the game. This includes a full day of events culminating with fireworks, a water light show, and a free concert by Keith Urban. Meanwhile in Denver, Broncos fans have been annoyed that their stadium is adorned with a picture of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco. This is the same quarterback who squashed the Broncos Super Bowl hopes in January with a last second, game-winning, hail mary pass in double overtime. The NFL mandated pictures of both quarterbacks, Manning and Flacco, are also lining the streets of downtown Denver. NFL vice president of corporate communications, Brian McCarthy, defends the banners saying, “think of this game as more of an opening ceremony, a celebration of the new season for the entire league.” But to Denver Broncos fans, this is a home game.

Where do you stand on the controversy? Ravens fans, how upset are you that your Super Bowl Champions open up their season on the road? And does having the NFL Kickoff celebration make up for it? Broncos fans, how annoyed are you that this celebration is taking place in Baltimore and not in Denver? And how upset are you that there is a huge picture on your stadium of the guy who ended your season last year? Orioles fans, how annoyed are you that this NFL kickoff celebration with fireworks and a concert will be taking place just a few blocks away during the game? However you feel about it, all this controversy has already made this Ravens – Broncos rematch one of the most talked about games and kickoff is still hours away. May the best team win!
